Cham sits in the Upper Palatinate on the Regen River, in a broad basin that opens toward the Bavarian Forest and the Czech border. On a map the river is the defining line. It curves around the town, splits into side arms and leaves meadows and wetlands in its floodplain.
The historic centre is compact and roughly oval, and its old walls can still be read in the ring of streets around it. The Biertor, a medieval gate tower, is its best-known landmark. Beyond the old town, newer districts and roads spread out across the valley, and the railway runs along one side of it.
