Changli sits in Qinhuangdao, in the northeast of Hebei province, on flat land between the hills and the Bohai Sea. The town itself has a compact, largely rectilinear street plan, and the countryside around it is stitched with field roads and orchard plots that stretch toward the coast to the south and east.
Jieshi Mountain rises just north of the town and carries a long literary history: it is linked to early emperors who came to view the sea and to the famous poem by Cao Cao on gazing at the ocean. Changli is also one of the best-known wine-growing areas in China, and vineyards shape much of its surrounding land.
