Charikot is the administrative centre of Dolakha district in Nepal's Bagmati Province, east of Kathmandu. It sits on a ridge high above the surrounding valleys. The map is shaped entirely by terrain. The town stretches along the crest, and roads wind down the slopes in switchbacks towards farming villages and rivers far below.
On clear days, the ridge has views of the high Himalaya, including the Gaurishankar range to the north. The old town of Dolakha Bazaar, with its temples, lies close by along the same hills. The district was hit hard by the 2015 earthquakes, and much of the area has been rebuilt since then.

Switchback roads
Roads leave the ridge in tight zigzags down the steep hillsides. These sharp curves are the most dramatic lines on the map.
