Châteauguay lies on the south shore of the Montreal region, where the Châteauguay River flows into Lake Saint-Louis, a wide section of the St. Lawrence. On the map, the river winds through the city from the south. The shoreline forms a long northern edge, and a network of suburban streets fills the land between them.
At the river's mouth is Île Saint-Bernard, a mostly wooded island with walking trails and a wildlife refuge. On the map it is a quiet green shape against the water. The river's name is also linked to the Battle of the Châteauguay in 1813, fought upstream during the war between Britain and the United States.
A Châteauguay map poster shows a pattern familiar from many North American suburbs: curving crescents, cul-de-sacs and longer arterial roads. Here, however, the river and the lake give it a clear structure. In monochrome, the meanders and the island stand out against the fine residential grid.
The Châteauguay River curves through the city in broad loops before reaching the lake. It is the most distinctive line on the poster.
The island at the river's mouth is largely forest and nature reserve. It appears as a calm, unbuilt area surrounded by water.
The city's northern edge follows the wide lake, opening the composition to a large expanse of water facing the island of Montreal.
