Chauk lies on the east bank of the Ayeyarwady in Magway Region, in the dry zone of central Myanmar. On a map the wide river runs along the western edge of the town, often with sandbanks and channels visible in its bed. The streets spread east from the riverbank into gently rising, arid country.
The town grew up around one of Myanmar's oldest oil fields, which has been worked since the early twentieth century, and the oil industry still shapes the landscape around it. A long road bridge crosses the Ayeyarwady here and connects Chauk to the western bank. The temple plain of Bagan lies a short distance upstream.
