Chenārān lies in Razavi Khorasan province in northeastern Iran, northwest of Mashhad. It sits in the wide Kashafrud valley, between the Binalud mountains to the south and the Hezar Masjed range to the north. From above, the town looks like a compact grid of streets on flat ground. Irrigated fields and orchards surround it, and the valley's main road and railway pass nearby.
The town's plan is practical and fairly regular. A central core of shops and older streets gives way to newer residential districts at its edges.
