Chenghai lies in the Yongsheng area of northern Yunnan, in a highland landscape of long mountain ridges and deep valleys. The place shares its name with Chenghai Lake, a narrow lake that stretches north to south between the hills. On the map, the lake is the main shape, a long dark or blank body with settlements and fields along its shores.
The lake is known for its alkaline water and for the cultivation of spirulina, which has made it one of the few natural places in the world where that algae is commercially farmed. Around the water, the flat ground is used for farming and villages, while the slopes rise steeply behind them.
A Chenghai map poster uses that simple, strong composition. The long lake sits in the middle, a thin band of streets and fields follows the shoreline, and mountain roads switchback up the ridges. It is a rural and elemental design, built more from landform than from streets.
