Ko e mape
Cherkessk is the capital of Karachay-Cherkessia and lies on the right bank of the Kuban River. Here the river leaves the mountains and enters the steppe. From above, the city has a clear, regular plan. Long straight streets run parallel to the river, crossed by shorter ones, and the whole grid is tilted to follow the valley.
The Kuban gives the city its western edge. Its braided channels, islands and wooded banks form a band of irregular shapes beside the ruled blocks. To the south the land begins to rise towards the Caucasus, and the roads that lead into the mountain valleys start from the city's southern edges.
A Cherkessk map poster shows a city shaped by one river and one plan. The parallel streets give the composition a strong rhythm, and the Kuban's looser course sets it off. In monochrome, the grid and the river read as two separate textures, rather like a draughtsman's plan placed beside a sketch.
The river runs along the city in several channels with islands and green banks. It forms a loose, natural border to the regular street grid.
Long avenues run lengthwise through the city in orderly lines. They give Cherkessk a clear, striped structure that is easy to read from above.
Routes leave the city to the south towards the Caucasus foothills and valleys. On the map you can see Cherkessk acting as a gateway between the plain and the range.
