Chiclayo lies on the flat coastal plain of northern Peru, a few kilometres inland from the Pacific. The land is dry, and the city's street network spreads evenly in every direction, with a centre around the main square and long avenues leading out. Beyond the urban edge, irrigated fields, many of them sugarcane, form a green band against the desert.
The region was home to the Moche and Lambayeque cultures, and their adobe pyramids still stand across the valley. In 1987, the royal tomb of the Lord of Sipán was found at Huaca Rajada, east of the city, and its treasures are now shown in the Royal Tombs Museum in nearby Lambayeque.
Chiclayo is known as the city of friendship. It gained wider attention in 2025, when Robert Prevost, who had served as bishop of Chiclayo, was elected Pope Leo XIV. A Chiclayo map poster shows the even street grid, the roads to the coast and the fields that surround the city.

Roads lead west toward Pimentel and the Pacific shore, connecting the city with the beach towns a short distance away.
