Chipiona sits on the Atlantic edge of the province of Cádiz, close to where the Guadalquivir opens into the ocean. From above, the town is a tight, low cluster of streets pressed against the shoreline. On its northern and southern sides long bands of sand run away along the coast, and the plain behind is divided into vineyard and farm plots. It is a small place, and the grain of its streets is easy to follow on paper.
The best-known landmark is the lighthouse, often described as the tallest in Spain. It stands near the water at the western end of town, and on a map its position explains why it was built there, on a low headland facing both the river mouth and the open Atlantic. Close to the shore, stone tidal fish traps called corrales curve into the shallows. In detailed renderings they show up as faint arcs just beyond the sand.
A Chipiona map poster shows a town defined almost entirely by its coast. The dense centre, the straighter streets of later expansion and the thin roads leading inland toward Sanlúcar and Rota all fit into one frame. Chipiona is also known for its moscatel wine and as the hometown of the singer Rocío Jurado, so the map carries more associations than its size would suggest.
The lighthouse stands on the low western point of town, where the coastline turns. It fixes the whole composition, a single mark where land, river mouth and ocean meet.
Long, unbroken strips of sand run north and south of the centre. In black and white they make a clean pale border between the street grid and the open water.
Traditional stone corrales sit in the intertidal zone just off the shore. At closer scales they show up as delicate curved lines in the shallows.

Ko e hā ʻa Chipiona
People hang Chipiona on the wall to remember summers by the Atlantic, family visits or a first home near the coast. The simple outline of town and shore suits a hallway or a bedroom and holds up well at larger sizes.
