Garrison compounds

Cimahi sits on the western rim of the Bandung basin in West Java, and from above it is hard to say where it ends and its larger neighbour begins. Its streets run without a break east into Bandung, while to the west they thin out toward Padalarang. What a map does show is a long, narrow city stretched north to south, with the land rising steadily toward the hills in the north.
The town grew as a military garrison in the Dutch colonial period, and you can still see that in its plan. Large, regular compounds with orderly internal roads break up the finer mesh of kampung lanes. A toll road and a railway both cut through the city on their way into Bandung, drawing strong lines across an otherwise dense, irregular pattern of small streets.
Cimahi became an autonomous city in 2001, separated from the surrounding regency, yet its layout still carries the marks of older, overlapping plans. A Cimahi map poster shows those layers in simple black lines: broad institutional blocks, meandering neighbourhood streets and the rising northern slopes. The frame is small enough to take in at a glance.

Two strong transport lines cross the city toward Bandung. They are the main structural strokes of the composition, running through the tighter neighbourhood street pattern.
North of the centre the street network loosens and follows the terrain as the land rises toward the volcanic highlands, with roads bending along ridges instead of running straight.

For people who grew up in Cimahi or served there, this map is familiar in a particular way: the barracks, the train line, the lanes between them. It also pairs well with a Bandung poster, completing the western side of the basin.
