Clarksdale lies in the Mississippi Delta, the flat alluvial plain in the northwest of the state, where fields stretch to the horizon. From above, the town is a grid of streets cut by the looping course of the Sunflower River, with railway lines running through the centre and the old commercial blocks gathered near the tracks and the river.
Clarksdale is closely tied to the history of the blues. Muddy Waters grew up nearby, the Delta Blues Museum occupies the old freight depot, and the junction of Highways 61 and 49 is widely associated with the crossroads legend. Live music clubs such as Ground Zero keep that tradition present in the downtown streets.
A Clarksdale map poster balances the regularity of a railroad town with the meanders of the river and the open geometry of Delta farmland. The highways leave the frame as long straight lines, pointing north toward Memphis and south through the Delta. It is a quiet, graphic image of a place whose music travelled around the world.
The river loops through the town in soft, winding curves, the one irregular natural line crossing the otherwise orderly street grid of downtown Clarksdale.
Two of the Delta's best-known roads meet in Clarksdale, their long straight lines crossing the map and connecting the town to Memphis, Jackson and the wider Delta.
Rail lines run through the heart of town, with the historic commercial blocks and the former freight depot gathered close to the tracks.
