Cờ Đỏ is a rural district of Can Tho in the heart of the Mekong Delta. The landscape is flat and low, and people have organised it around water for generations. On a map, the district looks like a lattice of canals, many of them dug in long straight lines, and roads and houses line their banks.
Most of the land between the waterways is rice paddy, so the built-up areas stretch out in thin ribbons instead of forming compact blocks. Small market centres sit where canals meet or where a road crosses a channel. The name translates as "red flag", which is common in Vietnamese place names from the twentieth century.
A Cờ Đỏ map poster is closer to a drawing of a working landscape than to a city plan. Crossing lines of canals and roads, interrupted by bridges and junctions, give the sheet a calm, almost geometric rhythm. It is an unusual subject that people from the delta recognise immediately.
Long straight canals cross the district at regular intervals. They form a grid of water that shapes where people farm, travel and build.
Houses and small shops line the canal banks and roads in narrow strips. On the map, the built-up areas look like fine threads rather than blocks.
The broad spaces between the waterways are mostly rice fields. They remain largely blank on the poster and give the linear network plenty of room.

For families from the Mekong Delta, a map of the home district captures something a photograph struggles to show: how the land is organised around water. It is a thoughtful gift for relatives who have moved to the city or overseas.
You can set the title, the subtitle and the coordinates line yourself, for example with a commune name or a family date. It comes in five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand.
