Coatepec lies just south of Xalapa, on the humid eastern slopes of the Sierra Madre Oriental. The historic centre follows a regular colonial grid of blocks around a central plaza and church. The town is best known for its coffee. The shaded plantations around it made Coatepec one of Mexico's traditional coffee centres, and it is officially recognised as a Pueblo Mágico.
