Coatzacoalcos lies in southern Veracruz, on the western bank of the Coatzacoalcos River where it meets the Gulf of Mexico. The map is framed by water on two sides: the wide river to the east and a long, straight beach along the north. The city's grid runs back from the shore, while port facilities and industrial zones line the riverbank.
The city is one of Mexico's main petrochemical centres, with large complexes such as Pajaritos, Cangrejera and Morelos in the surrounding area. It is also the Gulf terminus of the Interoceanic Corridor across the Isthmus of Tehuantepec to Salina Cruz. An immersed tunnel under the river, opened in 2019, now joins the bridges linking the city with the eastern bank.
A Coatzacoalcos map poster balances the long malecón and beaches against the more angular shapes of docks, tank farms and rail yards. In black and white, the river mouth becomes a striking open space at the edge of the city grid, giving the composition a clear sense of direction toward the sea.
The Coatzacoalcos River widens as it meets the Gulf of Mexico, forming the eastern boundary of the city and the largest open shape on the map.
A long promenade follows the northern shore, a straight line of coast set against the city's grid, lined by beaches facing the Gulf.
Docks, rail lines and industrial complexes along the river create angular, large-scale forms that contrast with the fine residential blocks inland.
