Cojímar lies on the northern coast of Cuba a few kilometres east of central Havana, where the small Cojímar river meets the sea. On a map the old village gathers around the river mouth and a short stretch of waterfront, while newer housing spreads inland and east toward the large prefabricated district of Alamar. The coastline itself is low and rocky, drawn as a clean, gently indented edge.
The village is closely linked to Ernest Hemingway, who kept his boat Pilar here and drew on the local fishing community for The Old Man and the Sea. His captain, Gregorio Fuentes, lived in Cojímar, and fishermen later raised a bust of the writer near the waterfront. A small seventeenth-century fortification, the Torreón de Cojímar, still guards the entrance to the bay.
A Cojímar map poster shows why the place has kept its own identity despite being part of the capital. The river and bay create a natural break in the coastline, the old streets remain compact and irregular, and the grid of later neighbourhoods reads as a distinct layer behind them. In monochrome, the meeting of land and sea becomes the centre of the composition.
The Cojímar river enters the sea through a small bay, breaking the straight northern coastline and giving the old village its natural harbour and focal point.
The small seventeenth-century fort stands at the entrance to the bay, a compact point on the shoreline that has watched over the village for centuries.
Irregular streets of the old fishing village contrast with the broad, planned blocks of neighbouring Alamar, showing two very different eras of Havana's growth.

Readers of Hemingway, travellers who took the short trip from Havana and Cubans with family in the village all find something in this map. The meeting of river, bay and open sea gives the poster a quiet, literary atmosphere.
