Columbia Heights sits in Northwest Washington, just north of Florida Avenue. That road was once called Boundary Street and marked the edge of the original L'Enfant city. From above, the neighbourhood picks up the capital's rectangular grid, with lettered and named streets crossing numbered ones, but it has fewer of the diagonal avenues that define the downtown map.
The land rises as it heads north from the old boundary, which explains the name. 14th Street and 16th Street run through as strong north–south spines, and dense rows of townhouses fill the blocks between them. At the southwestern corner, Meridian Hill Park forms a terraced green rectangle, and Howard University lies close by to the east.
A Columbia Heights map poster shows Washington from a neighbourhood's point of view, not through its monuments. Long rowhouse blocks, a busy commercial crossing around the Metro station and the formal outline of the park fit neatly inside one frame, a closely drawn corner of the city laid out in straight lines.
The park forms a clean rectangular block on the southwestern side of the neighbourhood, with its terraced, formal layout clearly different from the rowhouse streets around it.
These two long north–south streets organise the neighbourhood. 14th Street carries the commercial centre, while 16th Street runs in a straight line toward the White House.
Florida Avenue, once the city's northern limit, runs along the southern edge. North of it the grid carries on, but it reads slightly differently from the L'Enfant plan.
