Comonfort lies in Guanajuato between San Miguel de Allende and Celaya, in the fertile Bajío. The Río Laja passes close to the town, and a line of trees and fields follows the valley floor. The town centre is a compact grid around the main square and parish church. Newer neighbourhoods spread outward along the roads.
The town was known as Chamacuero until the nineteenth century, when it was renamed in honour of President Ignacio Comonfort. It is known for its volcanic-stone crafts, especially molcajetes, the traditional stone mortars used in Mexican kitchens.
A Comonfort map poster shows a typical Bajío pattern at small scale. There is a square-centred grid, the green corridor of the river, and roads heading toward larger neighbouring towns, all set on a broad, cultivated plain.
The river runs near the town through a band of fields and trees. It is the main natural line crossing the plain.
The historic centre follows a grid around the plaza and parish church. It is the orderly core from which the town grew.
Around the town, rectangular fields and rural roads fill the valley. They give the poster a light, patterned edge.
