Corumbá is in Mato Grosso do Sul, in western Brazil, on the right bank of the Paraguay river. The town sits on a bluff above the water, with a regular grid of streets that ends at the riverbank. Beyond the river and around the town lie the wetlands of the Pantanal, while to the west the Bolivian border is close by.
The town was once an important river port, and old buildings along the waterfront reflect that past. Today it is the main gateway to the southern Pantanal for fishing and nature trips, and a border town with Puerto Quijarro in Bolivia. The municipality is very large, extending over a huge area of wetland and hills.
A Corumbá map poster shows a clear grid on high ground next to a river winding through wetlands. The contrast between straight streets and the natural curves of the Paraguay and its channels is striking in black and white. It suits people from the region and travellers who remember starting their Pantanal trip here.
The river passes beneath the town's bluff and continues through the Pantanal. Its curves and side channels create a natural, flowing pattern next to the grid.
The streets form a regular grid on high ground above the water. From above, the town looks like an orderly block set against the wetlands.
Corumbá lies close to Puerto Quijarro in Bolivia. On the map, the border area shows the town's position at the western edge of Brazil.
