Cowes sits at the northern tip of the Isle of Wight, on the west bank of the River Medina where it enters the Solent. East Cowes lies on the opposite bank, and the two are linked by a chain ferry known locally as the floating bridge. On a map, the river mouth and harbour are the defining shapes, with the open Solent beyond.
The town's streets are narrow near the waterfront, following the shoreline and rising up the slope behind it. The seafront parade curves west along the coast.
