San Miguel de Cozumel is the main town on the island of Cozumel, off the eastern coast of the Yucatán Peninsula. From above, the town is a neat grid pressed against the island's sheltered west shore. A long waterfront road runs along the channel, cruise piers extend into the sea to the south, and the airport lies just inland.
In Maya times the island was a pilgrimage site dedicated to the goddess Ixchel, and the ruins of San Gervasio stand in the interior.
