Crato lies in the Cariri region of southern Ceará, at the base of the Chapada do Araripe. This long, flat-topped plateau rises above the valley like a wall. On a map the city's streets spread across the lower ground and stop where the slopes begin. The escarpment's forested edge runs as a strong natural boundary along one side.
Springs flowing from the plateau make this part of the Brazilian sertão unusually green. The historic centre has squares, churches and an older street grid, and newer neighbourhoods extend toward Juazeiro do Norte and Barbalha. Together the three towns form a growing urban area in the heart of the Cariri.
A Crato map poster also points to the region's natural heritage. The Araripe Geopark, recognised by UNESCO, is based in the area and is known for its exceptionally well-preserved fossils from the Cretaceous period. For many people Crato is also a cultural centre of the Cariri, with long traditions of music, festivals and crafts.
The edge of the Chapada do Araripe forms a long green wall beside the city, a natural border that frames the street network on the map.
Squares and churches anchor an older grid of streets at the core, denser and more regular than the neighbourhoods further out.
Roads connect Crato with Juazeiro do Norte and Barbalha, and the built areas increasingly merge across the valley floor.
