Cukai is the main town of Kemaman district, at the southern end of Terengganu on Peninsular Malaysia's east coast. From above it is organised around the Kemaman River, which loops through the flat coastal plain before reaching the South China Sea, with the town centre built close to its banks and residential areas spreading along the roads leading away.
The surrounding landscape is low and green: plantations, patches of wetland and villages linked by coastal roads, with the East Coast Expressway running further inland. On the nearby coast lie Kemaman Port and industrial land tied to the region's oil and gas activity, which gives that part of the map broader, more geometric shapes.
Locally the town is known for Kemaman coffee and its traditional coffee shops. A Cukai map poster captures the modest core of shophouse streets, the river curving past and the grid of newer neighbourhoods, all rendered in clean lines that make a small coastal town look surprisingly graphic on a wall.
The river winds through the town and out to the coast, the strongest natural line on the map and the reason the settlement grew where it did.
The old commercial core is a tight group of short streets near the river, where rows of shophouses form narrow, regular blocks that print with fine detail.
Along the nearby coast, port and industrial areas introduce larger, cleaner shapes that contrast with the fine grain of the town and the soft edges of the plantations.
