Culpeper is a county seat in the Virginia Piedmont, set among rolling farmland between the Blue Ridge and the coastal plain. Its map shows a classic small-town layout. There is a compact historic core of short blocks around Main Street and Davis Street, a railway line running through town, and newer neighbourhoods and commercial strips spreading outward along the main highways.
Its history is long for an American town. In 1749 a young George Washington received his first official post here, as surveyor of Culpeper County. During the Civil War armies moved through the area again and again, and the Battle of Brandy Station, the largest cavalry battle of the war, was fought nearby in the county.
