Date lies on the northern shore of Funka Bay in southwestern Hokkaido. On the map, the urban area follows the coast as a band of fairly regular blocks with a railway and a main road along the water. Behind it the ground rises into farmland and wooded hills, and the municipality reaches far inland, so the city's outline is much larger than its compact built-up centre.
The city was founded in 1870 by retainers of a branch of the Date clan who moved north from the Sendai domain, and the name comes from them. Much older history lies nearby. The Kitakogane shell mound, a Jomon-period site overlooking the bay, is one of the Jomon Prehistoric Sites in northern Japan inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2021.
A Date map poster shows the long, smooth line of the Funka Bay shore, the grid of the town behind it and the roads leading towards Mount Usu and Lake Toya. The mild climate by Hokkaido standards has earned the area a reputation as a comfortable place to live, and the map carries that sense of calm, ordered space.
The city's southern edge is the broad, gentle curve of Funka Bay, a clean coastline that gives the poster a strong horizontal line and a large area of open water.
On raised ground near the coast, the Kitakogane site preserves Jomon-era shell mounds and settlement remains, part of a UNESCO World Heritage listing of prehistoric sites in northern Japan.
The settlement laid out after 1870 follows a fairly regular pattern of blocks between the railway and the hills, a tidy grid typical of Hokkaido's colonisation-era towns.

Date suits people who have lived on Hokkaido's southern coast, visited the volcanic landscape around Lake Toya, or have ties to the Date clan's history. Bay, grid and hills make a balanced, easy-to-read composition.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, perhaps with the year you arrived or a family date, and choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand to match your room.
