Dawei lies a little way up the Dawei River, where the estuary widens before it meets the Andaman Sea. On a map the town reads as a compact grid on the river's east bank. The streets are laid out in fairly regular blocks, and past the last houses they give way to paddy fields, plantations and the green ridges that run down this narrow strip of southern Myanmar.
It is the capital of Tanintharyi Region, the long southern arm of the country squeezed between the sea and the Thai border. The town is known for its wooden houses, its local dialect and the beaches of the peninsula to the west, where a road crosses low hills to reach the open coast. The estuary, the mudflats and the curving shoreline give the surrounding map a fluid, unfinished edge.
A Dawei map poster frames the town as the river shapes it. The wide channel sweeps along one side and the urban grid thins into farmland on the other, while fine lines trace the tributaries and tracks that link outlying villages. In black and white the water becomes a broad pale band, and it gives the whole composition a clear sense of direction, from the hills down to the sea.
The river broadens into a tidal estuary just below the town. Its wide, pale curve and branching side channels dominate one edge of the poster and set the scale for everything else.
The older part of town is laid out as a modest grid of streets close to the east bank. It is a dense, orderly block of lines that loosens as it spreads inland.
West of the river, a road climbs over low wooded hills toward the Andaman Sea shore. On the map it is a thin thread linking the town to a long, curving coastline.

Ko e hā ʻa Dawei
Dawei is a place people tend to remember precisely: a posting in the south, a family home, or a slow journey down the Tanintharyi coast. A map of its river and streets holds that memory quietly, with no need for a photograph.
You can set your own title, subtitle and coordinates line, perhaps a street name or the year you arrived, and choose from five styles: Classic black and white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Blueprint works especially well with the estuary.
