Delmenhorst lies in Lower Saxony directly southwest of Bremen, separated from the larger city by the Ochtum lowlands and the city boundary. The small Delme river winds through the town from south to north, and on the map its curving course and the green corridors along its banks give structure to an otherwise dense, flat urban area.
In the late nineteenth century Delmenhorst became an industrial town, known above all for the Nordwolle wool-combing works and for linoleum production. The Nordwolle site, a large complex of brick factory halls, has since been converted into a museum, housing and offices, and still stands out clearly on the map as a compact block of regular buildings.
