Dera Bugti is the main town of the district of the same name in eastern Balochistan, close to the foothills of the Sulaiman range. The landscape around it is arid, and on a map it appears as open ground crossed by dry watercourses, with the town forming a small, dense cluster where roads converge.
The district is the homeland of the Bugti tribe, and it is also known nationally for the Sui gas field, discovered in the early 1950s and for decades one of Pakistan's most important sources of natural gas. The town itself is modest in size, with a street pattern that grew outward from an older centre.
