Dhamtari is in central Chhattisgarh, on the plain drained by the upper Mahanadi River. From above, the town has a dense core of market streets, with main roads leading out through a flat landscape divided into rice fields. Rice is the main crop across this part of the state, and Dhamtari has long been a milling and trading centre for it. Upstream, large reservoirs built on the Mahanadi supply irrigation to the plain, which helps explain the regularity of the farmland seen around the town.
