Dholka lies in Ahmedabad district in Gujarat, on the flat plain south-west of Ahmedabad. From above, the old town is a dense mesh of narrow, irregular lanes, and newer areas spread out along the main roads with more regular plots. Farmland surrounds the town on every side, so the built area stands out as a distinct shape on open ground.
Dholka is an old settlement with a long local history. Its best-known feature on the map is Malav Talav, a large stepped reservoir traditionally attributed to Minaldevi, mother of the Chaulukya king Siddharaja Jayasimha. The town also has several historic mosques, and local tradition links it with Virata Nagari of the Mahabharata.

The historic centre is a dense web of narrow, winding streets, typical of old Gujarati towns and very different in texture from the straighter roads on the outskirts.
