Dixon sits in Solano County, on the flat floor of the Sacramento Valley between Vacaville and Davis. From above, the town is a compact grid of streets around an older downtown. Newer subdivisions with curving streets spread outward, and Interstate 80 runs along the edge. Beyond the last houses, the land becomes a pattern of large, rectangular fields.
The Union Pacific railway runs directly through downtown, a reminder that the town grew around the tracks in the nineteenth century. Dixon is known for the Dixon May Fair, often described as the oldest continuous fair in California. Agriculture, from field crops to livestock, remains central to the local economy.
