Dongcheng lies in the north-west of Hainan, China's tropical island province, in the gently rolling countryside of Danzhou. It is a rural town rather than a city district, and from above it appears as a compact cluster of streets and buildings around its main roads, surrounded by a wide mosaic of fields, orchards and plantation land.
