Dordrecht occupies an island surrounded by water: the Oude Maas, the Beneden-Merwede, the Noord and the Dordtse Kil all meet around it. The oldest part of the city lies at the northern point, where the rivers converge, and from above it is a compact tangle of harbours, quays and narrow streets. Newer districts spread south across the flat polder land.
Dordrecht received city rights in 1220, which makes it the oldest city in the province of Holland. In 1618 and 1619 it hosted the Synod of Dort, a major gathering of the Reformed churches. The massive tower of the Grote Kerk still dominates the skyline, and the Biesbosch national park lies to the east.

Old harbours
The historic centre is threaded with small harbours and quays. Their narrow basins cut into the street pattern and show how closely the city has always lived with the water.
