Dresden is organised around the Elbe. The river curves through the city in a wide arc, and unlike most European capitals, its banks are not lined with quays. They are mostly open meadows, broad green strips that flood in high water and keep buildings well back from the river. The Altstadt lies on the south bank, the Neustadt on the north, and a series of bridges links them.
The baroque city that made Dresden famous was largely destroyed in February 1945, and much of it has since been rebuilt. The Frauenkirche was reconstructed and reconsecrated in 2005. The Zwinger, the Semperoper and the Brühl Terrace line the south bank, and the Augustus Bridge leads across to the Neustadt. Upstream, the Blue Wonder bridge crosses the river at Blasewitz.

Altstadt and Neustadt
The rebuilt baroque core on the south bank faces the Neustadt across the river. The bridges between them form the main crossings at the centre of the poster.
Großer Garten
A large baroque park with straight avenues set in a near-perfect rectangle southeast of the centre. It is a clean geometric shape among the surrounding streets.
