El Astillero lies at the inner end of the Bay of Santander in Cantabria, a few kilometres from the city of Santander. On a map, the town wraps around a series of tidal inlets and estuaries, with the water reaching deep into the land and dividing the urban area into distinct districts.
The name means “the shipyard”. From the eighteenth century, royal shipyards at Guarnizo built ships for the Spanish Navy here, and shipbuilding and industry shaped the town for generations. Today, some of the tidal marshes have been restored as natural areas, forming green spaces between the streets and the bay.
An El Astillero map poster brings out the constant dialogue between land and water: quays, embankments and bridges set against the soft shapes of marshland. It suits people from Cantabria, those with shipbuilding family history and anyone who likes coastal towns with an industrial past.
Arms of the bay reach into the town, creating irregular water shapes that divide the streets into separate neighbourhoods.
Docks and industrial sites along the shore appear as large geometric shapes, a reminder of the town's shipbuilding origins.
Wetland areas along the edges of the bay add soft, organic forms between the town and the water, with paths running across them.
