El Oued lies in the Souf region of northeastern Algeria, on the edge of the Grand Erg Oriental, one of the largest sand seas in the Sahara. There is no river here despite the name. Water comes from the ground, and the city grew around oases hidden among the dunes.
The traditional architecture gave El Oued its nickname, the city of a thousand domes. Houses were roofed with small domes and vaults to cope with the heat and the lack of timber. Around the city, palm groves were planted in hollows dug into the sand, called ghouts, so the roots could reach the water table.
From above, an El Oued map poster shows an unusual pattern. It is a dense, irregular town surrounded by sand, with the edges broken by round and oval clearings where palm gardens once sat or still sit. It is a map shaped by desert life.
The older districts are a tight mesh of narrow lanes and low buildings, designed for shade and ventilation in the Saharan climate.
Ghouts, palm groves dug into the dunes, appear as rounded patches around the town. They are a distinctive feature of the Souf region.
Beyond the town, the street network quickly gives way to dunes. The poster leaves wide empty space that emphasises the desert setting.

El Oued is a map for Souf families at home and abroad and for travellers who have seen the Sahara up close. The contrast between town and desert makes a quiet, striking image.
