Enerhodar was founded in the 1970s to house the workers of the power stations built on the left bank of the Dnipro in Zaporizhzhia oblast. Its map shows that origin clearly: broad avenues, large residential blocks arranged in regular groups, and a compact shape that ends abruptly at the edge of the steppe and the water.
The town is home to the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, the largest nuclear plant in Europe, alongside a thermal power station. Its shoreline faced the Kakhovka Reservoir, which was largely drained after the destruction of the Kakhovka dam in 2023. Since 2022 the town and plant have been under Russian occupation.
An Enerhodar map poster records the plan of a place built for a single purpose: residential districts on one side, the industrial site and its cooling ponds on the other, and the water's edge between them. It is a restrained print of a town many former residents hold closely.
Housing districts are arranged in large, regular groups along wide avenues, a clear example of late Soviet town planning laid out in a single phase.
West of the town, the power plants and their cooling ponds form broad geometric shapes, larger in area than many of the residential districts.
The southern edge of town faced the Kakhovka Reservoir, whose shoreline gives the map a long waterfront boundary along the Dnipro.
