Enfield Lock sits in the northeast corner of the London Borough of Enfield, where the city meets the Lee Valley. On a map the east is dominated by water: the River Lea, the Lee Navigation with its lock and the large reservoirs beyond. To the west, terraced streets and later housing fill neat blocks up to the railway line and the main road.
The area is best known as the site of the Royal Small Arms Factory, which gave its name to the Lee-Enfield rifle. The old factory buildings on the island between the waterways have since been converted to homes and workplaces. Today the valley forms part of Lee Valley Park, a long green corridor of towpaths, marshes and open water.
