Épernay lies on the left bank of the Marne, where the valley opens between the vine-covered slopes of the Montagne de Reims to the north and the Côte des Blancs to the south. The town fills the valley floor and climbs the gentle hillsides. From above, its centre is a tight tangle of older streets pulled toward the river crossing.
The town is synonymous with Champagne. Grand houses, Moët & Chandon among them, line the straight, stately Avenue de Champagne, and beneath them run cellars cut into the chalk for many kilometres. In 2015 the avenue and its cellars were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list as part of the Champagne Hillsides, Houses and Cellars.
An Épernay map poster shows the architecture of the wine trade in plan. The long axis of the avenue cuts through the older streets, the Marne and its lateral canal trace smooth lines to the north, and the vineyards begin almost at the edge of town. It is an elegant sheet for anyone who loves the region.
A long, straight avenue runs east from the centre, lined with the headquarters of Champagne houses. On the map it stands out as a clean, deliberate line among the older, more irregular streets.
The river and the canal beside it run in parallel across the north of the town. The pair of smooth curves separates Épernay from the vineyard villages on the opposite slopes.
Vine-planted slopes surround the town on several sides, so the built-up area quickly gives way to open country and the centre sits framed by pale space on the sheet.
