The Acre River

Epitaciolândia lies in the far west of Brazil, in the state of Acre, where the country meets Bolivia. On a map the town is defined by water and borders. The Acre River curves past it and separates it from its twin, Brasiléia, while the Bolivian town of Cobija sits just across the frontier. Three urban areas in two countries press close together here.
The town was named after Epitácio Pessoa, who was president of Brazil in the early 1920s. It became a municipality in its own right in the early 1990s, separated from Brasiléia. Its street plan is mostly a practical grid of blocks laid out on low ground, with the road toward Rio Branco leaving to the east through forest and pasture.
An Epitaciolândia map poster captures a place that only makes sense in relation to its neighbours. The river's bends, the bridges and the grid of blocks on each bank show how closely the communities are tied together. As a single composition it reads almost like a diagram of a frontier, with the political line running through what looks on paper like one continuous town.
The river loops between Epitaciolândia and Brasiléia, and its meanders give the poster a strong curved line cutting through otherwise regular blocks.
Epitaciolândia and Brasiléia face each other across the water, joined by bridges, so the map shows two municipalities that function almost as one.
Cobija lies just across the international border, so the map covers streets in two countries, a rare thing to show in a single frame.

Ko e hā ʻa Epitaciolândia
A map of Epitaciolândia means something to people who have lived on this frontier, crossed it for work or trade, or have family on both sides. It also makes a quietly unusual print, since a national border runs straight through a continuous urban pattern.
The title, subtitle and coordinates line can all be changed, to mark a move or a crossing, for instance. The map comes in five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. The river curves come across particularly clearly in Paper and Sand.
