Erkelenz is a town in the Heinsberg district of North Rhine-Westphalia, between Mönchengladbach and the Dutch border. Its centre is compact, with an old town arranged around the market square and the church, and the remains of a medieval castle on one side. Around it, residential districts and villages spread across flat, fertile farmland.
The strongest feature on the wider map is the Garzweiler open-cast lignite mine, which lies to the east of the town. Several villages within Erkelenz's territory have been relocated because of the mine, and new versions of them were built elsewhere. The former village of Lützerath, part of Erkelenz, was cleared in 2023 after protests that drew international attention.
