Esperanza, in the province of Santa Fe, is known as the first organised agricultural colony in Argentina. It was founded in 1856 by European immigrant families, largely from Switzerland, Germany and France, who were granted plots of land to farm. That origin is still legible on the map, which is drawn with the rigour of a surveyor's plan.
The town centre is a regular grid of square blocks arranged around a central plaza, with straight streets extending evenly in each direction. Beyond the urban edge the grid continues at a larger scale as rural roads dividing the land into long rectangular fields, so that town and countryside share the same geometry.
To the east lies the valley of the Salado River, whose winding course and wetlands provide the only real curves in an otherwise ordered landscape. The city is often called the mother of colonies for the many settlements that followed its example. An Esperanza map poster shows that order clearly, block by block.
The main square sits at the heart of the grid, the point from which the even blocks of the colony town extend in all directions.
Outside the town, rural roads divide the land into large regular plots, a direct and visible legacy of the colony's founding allotments.
The river's meandering channel and wetlands east of the city add soft, irregular lines to a map otherwise built from straight edges.

Many families in Esperanza trace their roots to the first colonists, and a map of the grid their ancestors helped lay out is a meaningful piece for a family home or as a gift for relatives.
Personalise the title and subtitle, perhaps with the colony's founding year or your own family date, and adjust the coordinates. Choose one of five styles; Paper and Sand suit the agricultural setting well. Download HD files or order a matte print.
