Esslingen am Neckar lies just east of Stuttgart in Baden-Württemberg, where the Neckar valley narrows between vineyard-covered hills. Its old town survived the Second World War largely intact, which is rare among German cities of its size. The medieval street pattern, with its market squares, churches and half-timbered houses, can still be clearly read from above.
Water shapes the map. Besides the main river, side channels of the Neckar run through and around the old town, creating islands and a district sometimes called Little Venice. The Old Neckar Bridge, one of the oldest stone bridges in Germany, crosses one of these channels, and its arches once carried a major trade route.
