Fayzabad is the capital of Badakhshan province in northeastern Afghanistan. It lies in the valley of the Kokcha river, surrounded by steep mountains. The map shows how much the terrain limits the town. Streets and houses follow the narrow valley floor and the lower slopes, and they stretch along the river rather than spreading out.
As the main town of Badakhshan, Fayzabad is the administrative and trading centre for a remote, mountainous region. The province extends towards the Pamirs and the Wakhan corridor. The Kokcha flows through town on its way to the Amu Darya, and the valley has long served as a route through the mountains.
