Fengcheng lies in eastern Liaoning, within the administrative area of Dandong, not far from the border with North Korea. On a map, the city occupies a valley among hills, with a river running through the town and ridges rising on several sides. The central area forms a compact grid of streets, while newer districts follow the valley floor outwards.
The best-known landmark is Phoenix Mountain, a rugged range of peaks close to the city that gives Fengcheng its name and draws visitors for its cliffs, paths and temples.
