Firminy lies in the Loire department, southwest of Saint-Étienne, in the narrow valley of the Ondaine. The town grew with coal mining and metalworking, and the older streets are packed along the valley floor, with railway lines and roads alongside them. The valley sides rise on both sides and push the town into a long, irregular shape.
After the Second World War, Firminy-Vert was built on the slopes as a new district, and Le Corbusier designed several buildings there. They include the Maison de la Culture, a stadium, an Unité d'habitation and the Church of Saint-Pierre, which was completed long after his death. The Maison de la Culture is part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing of his work.
A Firminy map poster tells two stories. The dense valley streets reflect the industrial town, and the more open, planned layout of Firminy-Vert on the hillside reflects postwar modernism. Printed in black and white, the difference between the two is clear, and architecture enthusiasts will recognise the modernist quarter immediately.
The older town fills the narrow valley floor. Its streets run along the river, the railway and the main road.
The postwar district on the hillside has a more open, planned layout. Le Corbusier's buildings stand among green space here.
The layout still reflects the mining and metalworking past, with rail lines and larger plots along the valley floor.

Firminy appeals to families from the Loire mining valleys and to anyone who has made a trip to see Le Corbusier's buildings. The map works as both a hometown print and an architecture poster, and it looks particularly sharp in Blueprint.
