Fīrūzkūh lies high in the Alborz range, east of Tehran. On a map the town follows a narrow valley, its streets pressed into a long, tapering shape between steep slopes. The mountains around it appear as wide, empty ground, which makes the thin band of settlement all the more striking. This is a town where the terrain decides almost everything.
The town is on an important route between the capital and Mazandaran province on the Caspian coast. The Trans-Iranian Railway crosses the area, passing through tunnels and climbing steep grades on its way through the mountains. At this altitude summers are cool, and many people come to Fīrūzkūh to escape the heat of Tehran.

Railway line
The Trans-Iranian Railway passes through the area on its way between Tehran and the Caspian coast. It draws a thin line through the mountains alongside the road.
Road to Mazandaran
The main highway between Tehran and Mazandaran runs through the valley. It makes Fīrūzkūh a regular stop on the journey to the Caspian.
