Fonseca lies in the valley of the Ranchería river in the south of La Guajira, between the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta to the west and the Serranía del Perijá along the Venezuelan border to the east. From above, the town is a fairly regular grid of blocks, with the river and its tree-lined banks tracing a gentler curve nearby and roads running along the valley.
The area belongs to the heartland of vallenato music, and Fonseca shares that tradition with neighbouring towns along the valley. The surrounding land is dry and open for much of the year, used for cattle and farming, and the region is also known for large-scale coal mining further north along the Ranchería.
A Fonseca map poster keeps the focus on the town itself: its orderly streets, the edge of the river and the roads that link it with Barrancas, San Juan del Cesar and Riohacha. It suits guajiros living in Barranquilla, Bogotá or abroad, and anyone who wants a quiet reminder of a particular corner of Colombia.
The river runs close to the town, its winding course and green banks forming the main natural line that balances the regular street grid.
Fonseca's blocks follow a largely rectangular pattern, compact at the centre and loosening toward the outskirts where streets meet open land.
The main road follows the valley between the two mountain ranges, linking Fonseca with neighbouring towns in a long, steady line across the sheet.

For people from La Guajira, a map of Fonseca keeps the street where the family lives, or the route down to the river, within sight. The spare design leaves room for personal memories to fill in the detail.
Add your own title and subtitle, perhaps with a surname or a special year, and pick one of five styles, from Noir to Sand. The $9 digital files include six sizes, or order a printed poster with an optional wooden frame.
