Friedberg stands on a ridge on the eastern side of the Lech valley, looking across the river toward Augsburg. The Wittelsbach dukes of Bavaria founded the town in the thirteenth century as a fortified outpost on this border, and the layout still shows it. A compact core occupies the high ground, and the castle stands at the edge above the valley.
On the map, the old town is a tight cluster of streets around a central market square, bordered by traces of its former fortifications. Beyond it, later residential districts spread down the slopes.
