Frutillar lies on the western shore of Lake Llanquihue in southern Chile, facing the cone of the Osorno volcano across the water. The town was settled by German immigrants in the nineteenth century, and their wooden houses still line the waterfront. It is also known for the Teatro del Lago, a concert hall built right on the shore.
The town divides into two parts. Frutillar Bajo stretches along the lake in a thin band of streets that follow the shoreline, while Frutillar Alto sits higher up, with a more conventional grid around the highway. Roads connect the two across a slope of farmland and woods.
A Frutillar map poster captures the long shoreline and the quiet structure of the town. The lake fills a large part of the frame, giving the map a spacious, restful feel, and the waterfront streets draw a fine edge between land and water.
Frutillar Bajo runs along the lake in a narrow line of streets and houses, following the curve of the shore.
Frutillar Alto sits inland on higher ground, with a more regular layout that contrasts with the waterfront quarter below.
One of Chile's largest lakes, it fills much of the map with open space and sets the town against a wide horizon.
